Atlanta is the capital of Georgia and the most important business center in the Southeast. With a population of approximately 5.1 million people, Atlanta is the ninth largest Metropolitan Statistical Area in the U.S. From April 2000 to July 2006, Atlanta added 890,000 residents and recorded the largest population gain of the nation's 361 largest metro areas, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Strong population growth is expected to continue, with a projected increase of 2.2 million people between 2005 and 2030.
